Kieran Ryan, President of Pogo CareShare, is an active member of our startup community. Co-Founder James Kwan joined Startup Edmonton in the summer of 2014 and Pogo CareShare was a featured company at Launch Party 5.
Pogo is a car sharing service that gives members 24/7 access to a pool of vehicles located within a defined, central zone in the city. Often you can see a full row of Pogos parked outside of the Mercer Warehouse - many of the startup members take full advantage of their services, including free parking at City of Edmonton meters, gas and insurance. (Commons Members receive an awesome discount from Pogo CarShare!)
We sat down with Kieran to chat about Pogo CarShare and their Startup Edmonton experience.
What are you building?
Pogo is building an A to B carshare. The service allows people to find a car on their phone, drive where the want to go and leave the car when they get there. It's a lot like Uber, but you drive yourself.
Why build at Startup Edmonton & how has the community inspired you?
There are so many amazing people in Edmonton doing amazing things, and you get to meet a lot of them at Startup Edmonton. It's highly motivating to be around other start ups who have big ideas and are constantly moving and growing bigger, but who also face many of the same startup challenges that we face. You are surrounded by inspiration and resources that you just don't get working in your own office or at home. There is also an important sense of community, and it's a fun place to come and work every day.
What's next for Pogo Car Share?
We are a little over a year in, and we've shown that carsharing works in Edmonton. The goal now is to expand the service and it's availability in Edmonton, and start thinking about expanding to other cities.
