Ladies Learning Code is a Canada-wide not-for-profit organization providing women (and men) the opportunity to learn beginner-friendly computer programming and other technical skills through hands-on workshops in a social and collaborative way.
Python is a great language for beginners. Its beautiful and clean-looking syntax means you'll spend less time being confused (it looks sort of like English!), and more time understanding and applying the fundamentals of programming. Plus, even as a beginner, you can do fun things with Python, like make games and draw shapes!
In this Introduction to Python workshop, we will help you create an app that sells tickets, a "Guess the Number" game (Price is Right, anyone?) and as part of your final project, you'll re-create the schoolyard classic, Hangman.
By the end of the workshop, you'll know the answers to the following:
- What is programming?
- What companies and organizations use Python?
- What is Python used for?
- What is the Python shell?
You'll also be introduced to integers, strings, lists, dictionaries, objects and types, plus conditionals and loops. (Not sure what any of that means? This workshop is perfect for you!)
Theory is great, but as with all of our workshops, you'll spend most of the day "getting your hands dirty" and writing code. You'll get lots of experience with the following:
- Using the Python shell
- Running Python files
- Creating an app for selling tickets
- Creating a "Guess the Number" game (think Price is Right)
- Creating a Hangman game
