April Update: DemoCamp Alberta, Business Model 101, and new sessions of Preflight

April is jam-packed with incredible opportunities for you to get to work on your project idea at a workshop, connect with new people at meetups, attend special events like AccelerateAB, and prepare to showcase your progress at DemoCamp Alberta.

We had a blast last month at DevCon 2018 spending the day with more than 250 technical students. Student programs don't wrap-up at the end of the semester - we have Work @ Startup Wednesdays all year-round. Be sure to check out our free Student Membership for yourself or the students in your life.

If you're looking for support as you start and grow your tech company, we're open for business. We have programs, mentorship options, and flexible space options and the entire team is available to chat more with you. Reach out anytime!

Take care & wishing for warm weather!

P.S. Don't forget to pick-up your ticket to INVENTURE$ on June 6 - 8 at the Calgary Telus Convention Centre. There is a stacked line-up of speakers and last minute planning won't cut it for this one! We'd love to see you there.

So, inspiration struck! Now what? If you have a brilliant idea for a product, service, or project our Business Model 101 workshop is a great place to start nailing down your plan to launch it into the world.

In this three-hour session, you'll use a trusted startup tool called the Lean Canvas to map out who your customers are, how to reach them, and how to showcase the value you provide.

We specialize in tech startups, but Business Model 101 is an awesome session for all types of ideas. If you're curious if technology could play a part in your idea, this is the perfect place to start experimenting with the possibility.

Next sessions Tuesday, April 9 at 5:30 PM and May 5 at 9:00 AM.

I sat down with Amir Reshef, CEO and Co-Founder of dealcloser, to chat about his experience with applying for funding through government programs at the provincial and federal level.

Amir and his team have a healthy perspective on how to make the most of this type of funding. He shares four big lessons in the full post, and here is the top lesson to get you started.

  1. You need to have a plan to move forward with and without the funding. Being able to show your funding representatives how much more you can do with funding vs. without funding is one of the best ways to build your case.

Check out our full conversation on the blog. Scroll to the bottom for some fascinating insight into how it feels to hire talent and pay them more than what you earn as founder!

On March 24, we welcomed more than 250 students from across technical programs and post-secondary schools (plus, a handful of amazing high school students) for our fourth annual Student Developer Conference.

For us, one of the best parts of DevCon is seeing how much the technical student community has grown over the past few years. It's clear to see that students are engaged with one another, excited to be studying in Edmonton, and want more opportunities to improve their skills and prepare for life beyond the classroom.

A huge thank you to the many community leaders, startup and scaling company team members, and special guests that worked hard to put together a line up of keynotes and workshops for these ambitious students. Topics for the day included data visualization, cybersecurity, Android app development, machine intelligence, and so much more.

You can see more photos of the day over on the blog.
