June Update: Apply for Launch Party 9! Plus, lots of workshops, meetups and special events taking place all summer long.

Last week, we were in Calgary to connect with the startup community at the Invest 2018 and Inventure$ conferences. It was also a chance to partner on the first DemoCamp Alberta! After running for more than a decade in Edmonton, it was thrilling to see people from across the province embrace the technical show-and-tell.

Even with summer just around the corner, we have lots of workshops, programs, and special events for you to check out.

On Thursday, June 14th, I'm thrilled to welcome the Lazaridis Institute for the Management of Technology Enterprises to our space for a conversation on Blitzscaling with Chris Yeh. Chris will present specific practices to ignite and manage hypergrowth. It's exciting to have more discussions around how Canada can best support promising growth-stage companies to be more competitive around the globe. Scroll down for more information and to confirm your spot.

On May 25th, Startup Canada celebrated the nominees and winners for the fifth annual Startup Canada Awards - Prairies in Winnipeg. It's a chance to come together and recognize the outstanding achievements of entrepreneurs and founders across the country.

This year was extra special for Edmonton as three companies with deep ties to the startup community and commitment to global expansion won in diverse categories. These founders and their teams work incredibly hard to deliver products that their customers love. A massive congratulations to all of them on receiving recognition of their contributions to our national innovation and entrepreneurial economy.

  • Kendall and Justine Barber, Co-Founders of Poppy Barley, took home the Global Entrepreneurship Award presented by UPS for their approach to the global marketplace and the transparency with which they approach sustainability in all aspects of their business.
  • Dave Damer and the team at Testfire Labs and Hendrix.ai won the Innovation Award presented by Intuit QuickBooks.
  • Sam Pillar and Forrest Zeisler, Co-Founders of Jobber, received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award presented by Scotiabank

RunGunJumpGun started off as a fun parting gift to an old workplace.

“Originally it was going to be this super simple thing — just, you know, maybe stick our co-workers' faces on the characters so they can play as themselves. Just a totally tiny stupid game,” explains Logan Gilmour, co-founder of Edmonton-based game design studio, ThirtyThree Games.

But when they came up with an innovative twist on a classic Nintendo-style platformer, they realized they were on to something much bigger than a simple gag game.

Meet Logan and watch the full story on the blog!

Our next Hack Day is Saturday, July 7th. In addition to unstructured time for you to try co-working and get to work on your product, company or project, our upcoming hack day features two workshops.

Business Model 101 | 9:00 AM - 12 PM

Having a great idea is just the first step to building a fantastic product or service, there are lots of other factors to consider - like your customers, how to reach them, and what they are willing to pay. In this hands-on session with Shay, you'll create a one-page business model and tackle your idea from a new point of view.

Introduction to Prototyping | 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

In this 90-minute session, you will start work on your web or mobile app prototype. A great fit for non-technical founders, Stephanie will walk you through how to structure your ideas, access free and easy to use tools to build a working prototype, and make plans for user tests and how to incorporate feedback.

Limited availability - register today!

We're excited to join you on Facebook each week, and you can always catch the archive up on the blog. Bryan Schneck, our fantastic Front Desk Concierge, manages the broadcast each week. If you have an idea for a session, be sure to send a message our way on social media or email, hello@startupedmonton.com!

Thursday, June 14 | 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Startup Edmonton.

What is the secret to Amazon’s success? What do Facebook, Google and Airbnb have in common? Contrary to what you’ve read, it’s not superhuman founders, mythic “passion,” or spectacularly savvy venture capitalists. It’s Blitzscaling.

The Lazaridis Institute invites you to a presentation by Chris Yeh on specific practices to ignite and manage hypergrowth. Our goal is to collaborate with tech ecosystems across Canada to develop the strategies, tactics and expertise necessary to take startups to globally competitive scale. Join us after the presentation to eat, drink, and connect with the founders, CEOs, investors, policymakers and support organizations working to grow your local tech community.

Please note that Chris Yeh will be doing a LIVE, interactive webinar for this event.
