March Updates: Opportunities for Startups at Collision, DemoCamp Alberta Applications, Preflight and more!

March Updates

Today is our March Hack Day, and I'm thrilled to see new folks sticking around after Business Model 101 for lunch with our regular attendees. A big shout out to Farrow for the great sandwiches! I also spy teams from Scope AR and Amii working on their plans for our fifth annual Student Developer Conference.

This month, there are two incredible opportunities for you to apply to showcase your tech product to new customers, collaborators and investors - Collision and DemoCamp Alberta.

Collision is the fastest-growing tech conference in North America. Now in its fifth year, Collision has grown to more than 25,000 attendees. Following the lead of its European event Web Summit, Collision has become a crossroads for the world’s largest buyers and sellers of technology, alongside many of the world’s most disruptive emerging technology companies. We're bringing Edmonton companies with us to Toronto in May, but we need to hear from you before March 15!

Read on for updates on DemoCamp Alberta, Preflight, profiles on member companies, and lots of new job postings from our members.

DemoCamp Alberta | April 15 at the Calgary Central Library

DemoCamp is an Edmonton startup community tradition.

We're partnering with our friends at Startup Calgary for DemoCamp Alberta on April 15. It's a chance to connect with companies, teams, and investors gathered from across the province for AccelerateAB. As an added bonus, you can check out the newly opened Calgary Central Library!

The rules for DemoCamp remain the same: 7 minutes to demo working products, followed by 5 minutes for questions. No slides are allowed!

Interested in sharing your product? Applications are open until March 22.

Preflight Update | Saturday Sessions Start March 16

Work on your tech product idea at Preflight - Startup Edmonton’s flagship program to support early-stage entrepreneurs.

We announced our Saturday sessions of Preflight last month, but we heard loud and clear that you needed a bit more time to clear your schedules and make plans!

Shay Barker leads our next session of Preflight 1 on March 16. Join her from 10 AM - 12 PM on Saturday mornings to start work on your tech product and company. You'll meet a community of peers and supporters, make progress on your product idea each week, and feel confident that you're making informed decisions about your business.

Student Developer Conference - March 23, 2019

Our fifth annual Student Developer Conference is dedicated to helping students prepare for life beyond the classroom.

This year, we’re thrilled to announce that we're joining forces with amazing partners to offer beginner and advanced workshops in four tracks:

  • Amii is bringing their best and brightest for workshops on Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning, and Natural Language Processing.

  • Scope AR are industry leaders in augmented reality, working with folks like NASA (yes, that NASA), Toyota, and Microsoft. Join in workshops with team members building products that are shaping the future of the industry.

  • Darkhorse Analytics is joining us to share ways you can use data and visualizations to shape decisions, improve products and processes, and captivate audiences. Don't miss a chance to hear from Eugene Chen, CTO and Director.

  • MacEwan University brings UX expertise from the Bachelor of Design program to DevCon. Level-up your design knowledge from dedicated faculty members.

Student DevCon is suitable for postsecondary students studying computing science, computer engineering, or design with specialties in Web Design, User Experience, and Visual Communications; students with proficiency in computer programming or IT; and high school students with Comp Sci 20 or 30.

Startup Ski Trip, Socials, and Office Hours

Lauren Briske, Operations Manager at Startup Edmonton

Last month, more than 40 members of the startup community took to the mountains for the annual Startup Ski Trip. Lauren Briske, Operations Manager, organized a fantastic weekend with our friends at Backside Tours. It's just one of the many ways she works year-round to bring our community closer together. That's also her tearing it up on the hill in the photo!

Members of our space, Preflight and Talent programs all receive invites to monthly socials and activities, special events like the Startup Ski Trip, and office hours with our trusted partners like PwC, Alberta Innovates, BDC, Valhalla Private Capital and more. That's in addition to our never-ending supply of coffee!
