January Update: Harness the energy of a new year with Startup Edmonton

January Update: Harness the energy of a new year with Startup Edmonton

hope you had a wonderful holiday break and found time to relax, reflect, and reenergize. I'm grateful for the time spent with family over the past few weeks and feel more ready than ever to tackle the potential of 2019!

Our team was hard at work before the break to get you a full roster of events, workshops, and programs confirmed for the first quarter of the year. There is no better time than the start of a new year to learn a skill, meet more people from the start and tech community, or get to work on your idea.

Here are my top picks for January!

Our CEO, Tiffany-Linke-Boyko, sat down for a quick chat about what we have on the go this month and how you can harness the energy that comes with a new calendar year. New Year's resolutions can be tough to keep, and we’re here to help. Here are Tiffany’s top recommendations to help keep you motivated:

From Hacking to Habits - High School Students Make Big Changes In Just 24 Hours!

Between all the assignments, presentations and exam prep, it can be tough for students to squeeze in enough Zs.

Rather than groggily shuffle from class to class, a group of students from Harry Ainlay High School and Old Scona Academic created an app to help them get a solid eight hours.

Habit Creator is a game-enhanced habit tracker that helps users set, track and achieve personal goals. It was developed as part of HackED Beta — a 24-hour hackathon put on by the Computer Engineering Club of the University of Alberta.

Facebook Live - Three tips to shake up your leadership style before the end of the year

In this week’s Facebook Live, Tiffany Linke-Boyko shares three tips on how you can shake up your leadership style before the end of the year. Her best piece of advice is to treat the last 60 days of 2018 the same way you would the first 60 days of 2019. There is no need to wait until the new year to take on a challenge, learn a skill, or find something to optimize to make your work more efficient.

Launch Party 9 was a great night! Throughout the night, 800 community builders, business leaders, community champions, and supporters connected with our ten companies showing off their new tech products. It’s our favourite night of the year because so many Edmontonians come out to celebrate these companies, try their products, and act as their champions.

Late in the program, Mayor Don Iveson and Greg Burlet, Founder of Frettable, snuck outside for a chat all about the process of building a tech company in Edmonton. From Chief Feline Officers to the role of startup communities, the challenges of finding early-stage capital to setting up employee benefits - Greg and Don cover a lot of ground!

Edmonton Startup Week is back and better than ever! With over 50 (mostly free) workshops, socials and presentations, Startup Week is the biggest celebration of innovation, technology and entrepreneurship the city has to offer.

As we gear up for our fifth Startup Week, the Startup Edmonton team caught up with Startup Week director Matt Helt to find out more about the event’s origins and why an accelerator of Techstars’ caliber places such an importance on community building.

In this week’s Facebook Live, Tiffany and Stephanie share some of their favourite parts of Edmonton Startup Week. In partnership with Techstars, Edmonton Startup Week is a celebration of our city’s thriving startup and tech community! Join in on the fun October 15 - 19, 2018.

Registration is simple, but here are our top three tips to get started:

Launch Party 9 | Exciting Plans for October 18

Launch Party is my favourite event of the year. In 2010, Startup Edmonton held its first Launch Party at the Matrix Hotel. I volunteered to help check people in at the registration table that night, and it was my first interaction with the passionate startup community in Edmonton.

Since that first incarnation, Launch Party has found a home in many unique locations, from our space in the Mercer Warehouse to Rogers Place! This year we’re thrilled to be at the beautiful Enbridge Centre located at 10175 - 101 Street.

To accommodate even more people this year and give them the chance to try the hottest new tech products from local companies, we’re introducing two types of tickets. This way you can join in the fun right after the workday or come back and spend the evening with us.
