January Update: Harness the energy of a new year with Startup Edmonton

hope you had a wonderful holiday break and found time to relax, reflect, and reenergize. I'm grateful for the time spent with family over the past few weeks and feel more ready than ever to tackle the potential of 2019!

Our team was hard at work before the break to get you a full roster of events, workshops, and programs confirmed for the first quarter of the year. There is no better time than the start of a new year to learn a skill, meet more people from the start and tech community, or get to work on your idea.

Here are my top picks for January!

Facebook Live: How to use the Lean Canvas after you leave Business Model 101

In this week’s Facebook Live, Stephanie chats about how you can use the Lean Canvas after our Business Model 101 workshop ends. Even though it's just a piece of paper, the Lean Canvas can help hold you accountable to finding success quickly by supporting your efforts to make decisions based on data.

How early is too early to explore a new market? It's earlier than you think!

We're proud members of the Canadian Digital Media Network (CDMN). In addition to connecting with our peers across accelerators and incubators across the country, CDMN provides valuable programming for tech companies to propel their growth and connect them with founders around the world.

The Get There program is a unique opportunity that offers early-stage, high-growth high-potential Canadian tech startups a chance to demystify an international market. The program is designed to amplify the founder’s network and provide tips and tricks to make future visits easier and more cost effective. Each company receives pre-trip coaching before spending one week in market and financial support to offset some of the costs of the trip.

We sat down to chat with Laurie Maier, Manager Network Programs - CDMN, to talk about how early is too early to explore a new market (hint: it’s probably earlier than you think) and how to get the most out of a Get There trip.

Launch Party 9 | Exciting Plans for October 18

Launch Party 9 | Exciting Plans for October 18

Launch Party is my favourite event of the year. In 2010, Startup Edmonton held its first Launch Party at the Matrix Hotel. I volunteered to help check people in at the registration table that night, and it was my first interaction with the passionate startup community in Edmonton.

Since that first incarnation, Launch Party has found a home in many unique locations, from our space in the Mercer Warehouse to Rogers Place! This year we’re thrilled to be at the beautiful Enbridge Centre located at 10175 - 101 Street.

To accommodate even more people this year and give them the chance to try the hottest new tech products from local companies, we’re introducing two types of tickets. This way you can join in the fun right after the workday or come back and spend the evening with us.

Finding the right tool for the job is an essential step in any process, including building a tech product!

One of those tools is the Lean Canvas, which is our most used tool and at the core of our  Business Model 101 workshops. Stephanie sat down on Facebook Live and talked about how the Lean Canvas can help you tackle your business planning challenges from a new perspective, build a roadmap to move forward, and anchor your progress in providing value for your customer.

Student Summer Program @ Startup Edmonton

Student Summer Program @ Startup Edmonton

Our Student Summer Program teams are hard at work on their projects and products. Each summer, we welcome students from across schools and programs to work on a tech-enabled product at Startup Edmonton over four months. This year, we had record-breaking application numbers, and we're thrilled with the more than 20 students that have committed to exploring tech entrepreneurship with us.

Over the course of the summer, students have access to our coworking space, take part in the Preflight program, and embed themselves in the startup community. It's great seeing them make connections with founders and teams already!

Sometimes, when you're a student, it's easy to get caught up in the campus bubble. We give these students massive credit for trying something new, getting outside of the classroom and tackling the exciting world of entrepreneurship.

The #1 Mistake Founders Make When Pitching Investors

Pitching to investors can be daunting, but mastering the art of the pitch is essential to gaining access to capital. Being on your game is important when you have investors that hear from 40 to 50 companies a month. Having glitches in your pitch can cost you lasting relationships with people that otherwise could have skyrocketed your success.

Tiffany sat down on Facebook Live and talked about the #1 Mistake Founders Make When Pitching to Investors. Stay tuned to the end for a bonus piece of advice that's easy to start work on today. Check it out below!
