September Update: September Update: Edmonton Startup Week, Fall Workshop Schedule, and DemoCamp 42!

We're working hard to make your transition into Fall full of great opportunities to connect with the community, move your product idea forward, and have a lot of fun, too.

Early-bird ticket sales for Launch Party 9 close on September 15. Don't miss out on a $15 ticket to meet the hottest new startups in town and to try out their products first hand. Part of Edmonton Startup Week, Launch Party 9 takes place on Thursday, October 18.

Next week, join us for the first DemoCamp of the season. On Tuesday, September 18, our longest running community event returns to the University of Alberta campus with a line-up of technical demos followed by a Q & A. Don't miss out on presentations from some of our Student Summer Program teams!

September is one of my favourite months at Startup Edmonton because so many of our Student Members return to campus. We launched a brand-new home for students to explore the startup community at StudentStartupLife.com

See you soon!

Alumni Update: Customer Identity Leader LoginRadius Announces $17M Series A Funding from ForgePoint and Microsoft’s Venture Fund, M12

In March of 2015, Rakesh Soni shared a blog post "How Edmonton's startup ecosystem helped us dramatically grow LoginRadius." He shared the progress of the company and how they interacted with so many of the supporters, organizations, and events our city has to offer as they began their journey to build a tech product. They have come a long way since working on their business idea from a mining camp site room 120km north of Fort McMurray!

Today, LoginRadius announced a $17M in Series A funding from  ForgePoint and Microsoft’s Venture Fund, M12. This new injections of funds will be used to accelerate product innovation, customer acquisition, and global expansion.

Since its launch in 2012, LoginRadius has relentlessly focused on customer identity and has experienced triple-digit annual growth for the past two years. The company has grown to support global offices in Vancouver, London, San Francisco, Sydney, and Jaipur, with plans to more than double its workforce in the next 12 months.

Here at Startup Edmonton, we had the pleasure of working with LoginRadius in their very early days!

DemoCamp 41 | Thanks for another great season of demos!

DemoCamp 41 | Thanks for another great season of demos!

Tomorrow night, we're wrapping up another season of DemoCamp! DemoCamp brings together developers, creatives, entrepreneurs and investors to share what they’ve been working on and to find others in the community interested in similar topics. For presenters, it’s a great way to get feedback on what you’re building from peers and the community, all in an informal setting.

The rules for DemoCamp are simple: 7 minutes to demo real, working products, followed by a few minutes for questions, and no slides allowed.

DemoCamp is our most enduring community event! It'ss a chance to see awesome new projects, meet new people in the community and hear about job opportunities at our city's most exciting startups.

Our line-up for tomorrow night:

April Update: DemoCamp Alberta, Business Model 101, and new sessions of Preflight

April Update: DemoCamp Alberta, Business Model 101, and new sessions of Preflight

April is jam-packed with incredible opportunities for you to get to work on your project idea at a workshop, connect with new people at meetups, attend special events like AccelerateAB, and prepare to showcase your progress at DemoCamp Alberta.

We had a blast last month at DevCon 2018 spending the day with more than 250 technical students. Student programs don't wrap-up at the end of the semester - we have Work @ Startup Wednesdays all year-round. Be sure to check out our free Student Membership for yourself or the students in your life.

If you're looking for support as you start and grow your tech company, we're open for business. We have programs, mentorship options, and flexible space options and the entire team is available to chat more with you. Reach out anytime!

Take care & wishing for warm weather!

Join us for DemoCamp 40 on March 14

March marks a significant milestone for our most enduring community event, DemoCamp. Cam Linke, Founder of Startup Edmonton and DemoCamp instigator, started the Edmonton edition of technical show-and-tell nights as a catalyst to bring the startup community together.

One of the reasons DemoCamp has stood the test of time is its unrelenting commitment to celebrating people brave enough to show off their work to colleagues, competitors, teammates, and friends. Sometimes projects are polished and have big payoffs commercially, other times its side hustles made for fun and just to see if it was possible. Some demos go off without a hitch, other times the hacks to get the demo to work are more fun than the project!

The joy is in the mix and seeing into the process and ingenuity of our peers that is so often hidden behind the scenes. DemoCamp is hands-down the best place to take the pulse of our city's technology community: the demos, the Q & A, the shout-outs for jobs, the reminiscing of past failure and updates on progress, the student hackathon projects, and, of course, beers to follow.

We hope you'll join us for DemoCamp 40 on March 14th at CCIS on the University of Alberta Campus. Whether it's your first or fortieth time coming, we can't wait to see you.

HackED 2018 + Awesome Student Projects at DemoCamp #39

HackED 2018 + Awesome Student Projects at DemoCamp #39

Last night at DemoCamp #39 some of the student teams that participated in HackED2018, hosted by the Computer Engineering Club at the University of Alberta, join us to show off their projects. This edition of the hackathon was bitter-sweet for us. So many students, from across programs and schools, are participating that the event outgrew our home at the Mercer Warehouse. Over the past five years, we loved hosting students as they stretched their imagination, built projects on the fly, and taught themselves a dizzying amount of new skills - just because they could.

January Update: A full year of programs, Student DevCon on the horizon, and lots of recommended readings

January Update: A full year of programs, Student DevCon on the horizon, and lots of recommended readings

2018 is already off to a great start with lots of full meeting rooms, brand new members joining the space, and all of our Foundational Programs are open to registration!

The first few weeks back in the office are always full of plan making for the year ahead. We're so excited to help support even more tech founders, students, and startup community members in 2018.

Be sure to make a note on your calendar to join us for DemoCamp 39 on January 31st. Seeing folks demo their working products is the best inspiration to get started on your projects. Once you're inspired, Shay is leading more sessions of our Preflight program than ever before to guide you through the ups & downs of founding a tech company.

November Update: Preflight Sessions, Take Advantage of Ad-tech, and Edmonton Startup Week Recap

November Update: Preflight Sessions, Take Advantage of Ad-tech, and Edmonton Startup Week Recap

After an incredible Edmonton Startup Week in October, November is a chance for us to get back to the basics of supporting our city's startup and tech community the best way we know how: programs & mentorship, workspace, student activities, and fostering community events day-in-and-day-out.

Preflight is our most comprehensive program offering support to founders of early-stage tech-enabled companies. We have our 5-week sessions on Customer Validation and Telling Your Story coming up next week. There is no better time to start than now! Scroll down for highlights from one of our current members. If you have any questions or requests, drop me an email anytime.

Cheers!

Last night (November 22, 2016) was our 33rd edition of DemoCamp! It is the first place to check out new projects and products as they are in development. We love that it's a mix of super polished products and hacked together projects from internal hackdays, students & community members.

"Tonight was Edmonton’s 33rd DemoCamp which took place at the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences (CCIS) on the University of Alberta campus. Here is my recap of DemoCamp Edmonton 31 from back in May. I presented with Karen at the last one in September and didn’t actually post about it! More on that later. " - Mack Male.
