Recommended Listen: Getting to Burstiness

Recommended Listen: Getting to Burstiness

With all of my travel the last few weeks, it's been a great chance to catch up on episodes from some of my favourite podcasts. In WorkLife with Adam Grant: A TED original podcast, he explores what makes for great teams and working environments by going to some of the world's most unusual workplaces.

In one of the best episodes, Adam goes to The Daily Show to sit in for a day to see what it takes to harness the power of group creativity in high-pressure situations. We've all sat through brainstorming sessions where at the end it seems like the least attractive, most safe ideas float to the top, and, frankly, it feels like mediocracy is rewarded.

After listening to The Daily Show team chat about their workflow and relationships to one another, Adam uncovers four essential elements to improve creativity and innovative results from your time working together as a team.

So, how do we start being braver when it comes to ideas?

"What's the biggest lesson 2017 taught you?" Steph, our Program Manager, asked as we started our planning for the year.

Without hesitation, the biggest lesson  from a year full of highs and lows is that our members, companies, students, and team need to be more creative, ambitious, even reckless in the types of problems they're tackling and the scale of solutions they're building.

2017 was full of travel and conversations with my colleagues across the country and around the world. The most significant takeaway from my experiences last year in cities like San Franciso, Waterloo, and New York is that early-stage teams are unapologetic when it came to how daring and unexpected their products are.

August Update: Shared milestones, Preflight 1 - applications open, DemoCamp 37, and more job postings!

I hope this holiday weekend finds you well! This month we have the opportunity to share milestones from some of our member and alumni companies. It's a pleasure to see our city's startup community support and champion so many founders (and their teams) as they launch and grow tech-enabled companies.

There is no better time than now to get started on your idea or share your product with the community. Currently, we have applications open for:

  • Preflight 1: Preflight is our year-round program dedicated to supporting your efforts to build, launch, and grow a tech-enabled product. Our next round of guided sessions starts August 22.
  • DemoCamp 37:  A startup community classic! Join us for technical show-and-tell on September 27.
  • Launch Party 8: We're looking for amazing tech-enabled companies for our flagship Edmonton Startup Week event on October 19.
