April Update: DemoCamp Alberta, Business Model 101, and new sessions of Preflight

April is jam-packed with incredible opportunities for you to get to work on your project idea at a workshop, connect with new people at meetups, attend special events like AccelerateAB, and prepare to showcase your progress at DemoCamp Alberta.

We had a blast last month at DevCon 2018 spending the day with more than 250 technical students. Student programs don't wrap-up at the end of the semester - we have Work @ Startup Wednesdays all year-round. Be sure to check out our free Student Membership for yourself or the students in your life.

If you're looking for support as you start and grow your tech company, we're open for business. We have programs, mentorship options, and flexible space options and the entire team is available to chat more with you. Reach out anytime!

Take care & wishing for warm weather!

Student DevCon 2018 | Thank you for making it our best one yet!

Thank you for making Student DevCon 2018 our biggest and best one yet. Here is a quick sneak peek - more photos and video to come soon.

We're thrilled to offer year-round programs and membership for students across programs and schools including Work @ Startup Wednesdays, loads of on-campus events, and our upcoming Student Summer Program.

Student DevCon 2018 | Don't Miss Out!

Student DevCon 2018 | Don't Miss Out!

Tomorrow, Warren is sitting down for a Facebook Live session all about how to make the most of our city's startup community as a student. We'll archive it and post a link here when it goes up, so you don't miss any of his recommendations!

One thing we hear a lot from students is that they're nervous about making mistakes when it comes to building a project, meeting an important person from a company, or applying for a job. We totally get it, sometimes school feels like a high-stakes game and when you make a mistake, or even fail, the consequences are real. You have to take a course again, that costs money and your path to graduation can feel further away than ever before. The bad news is that fear of making a mistake can hold you back from taking advantage of opportunities that are created just for you to succeed in the long run.

The good news is, there is a massive community in Edmonton to support you every step of the way (and most of us still remember what it was like to be a student and a little unsure of what comes after graduation.)

Student DevCon, March 24, is our biggest day of the year for students and it combines three of our favourite opportunities for students:

February Update

February Update

The first weeks of 2018 started with a bang! Lots of new faces joining us for coworking, an action-packed DemoCamp with creative projects from the recent HackED student hackathon, and our first session of Preflight is already complete.

My recommendations this month:

  • Check out what Amir and Brea have to say about our Preflight program & apply for our next session starting on March 1st.
    • Preflight is an annual membership that comes with ongoing mentorship opportunities outside of learning sessions.
  • Sign up for a Business Model 101 session. Steph is offering a special weekend edition on March 3rd for those of you with packed evenings!
  • Apply for DemoCamp! Our most enduring community event is turning 40, and we're on the hunt for great projects & products to share.

HackED 2018 + Awesome Student Projects at DemoCamp #39

HackED 2018 + Awesome Student Projects at DemoCamp #39

Last night at DemoCamp #39 some of the student teams that participated in HackED2018, hosted by the Computer Engineering Club at the University of Alberta, join us to show off their projects. This edition of the hackathon was bitter-sweet for us. So many students, from across programs and schools, are participating that the event outgrew our home at the Mercer Warehouse. Over the past five years, we loved hosting students as they stretched their imagination, built projects on the fly, and taught themselves a dizzying amount of new skills - just because they could.

January Update: A full year of programs, Student DevCon on the horizon, and lots of recommended readings

January Update: A full year of programs, Student DevCon on the horizon, and lots of recommended readings

2018 is already off to a great start with lots of full meeting rooms, brand new members joining the space, and all of our Foundational Programs are open to registration!

The first few weeks back in the office are always full of plan making for the year ahead. We're so excited to help support even more tech founders, students, and startup community members in 2018.

Be sure to make a note on your calendar to join us for DemoCamp 39 on January 31st. Seeing folks demo their working products is the best inspiration to get started on your projects. Once you're inspired, Shay is leading more sessions of our Preflight program than ever before to guide you through the ups & downs of founding a tech company.
