January Update: Harness the energy of a new year with Startup Edmonton

hope you had a wonderful holiday break and found time to relax, reflect, and reenergize. I'm grateful for the time spent with family over the past few weeks and feel more ready than ever to tackle the potential of 2019!

Our team was hard at work before the break to get you a full roster of events, workshops, and programs confirmed for the first quarter of the year. There is no better time than the start of a new year to learn a skill, meet more people from the start and tech community, or get to work on your idea.

Here are my top picks for January!

Recommended Listen: Getting to Burstiness

With all of my travel the last few weeks, it's been a great chance to catch up on episodes from some of my favourite podcasts. In WorkLife with Adam Grant: A TED original podcast, he explores what makes for great teams and working environments by going to some of the world's most unusual workplaces.

In one of the best episodes, Adam goes to The Daily Show to sit in for a day to see what it takes to harness the power of group creativity in high-pressure situations. We've all sat through brainstorming sessions where at the end it seems like the least attractive, most safe ideas float to the top, and, frankly, it feels like mediocracy is rewarded.

After listening to The Daily Show team chat about their workflow and relationships to one another, Adam uncovers four essential elements to improve creativity and innovative results from your time working together as a team.

February Update

February Update

The first weeks of 2018 started with a bang! Lots of new faces joining us for coworking, an action-packed DemoCamp with creative projects from the recent HackED student hackathon, and our first session of Preflight is already complete.

My recommendations this month:

  • Check out what Amir and Brea have to say about our Preflight program & apply for our next session starting on March 1st.
    • Preflight is an annual membership that comes with ongoing mentorship opportunities outside of learning sessions.
  • Sign up for a Business Model 101 session. Steph is offering a special weekend edition on March 3rd for those of you with packed evenings!
  • Apply for DemoCamp! Our most enduring community event is turning 40, and we're on the hunt for great projects & products to share.

Full Circle Visuals, Preflight member company and Launch Party alumni, were recently featured in  The Globe and Mail as experts in the field of virtual-reality content production. Ryan and Sam bring together a mix of journalistic excellence (think back to the Edmonton Journal's ground-breaking 360-degree dodgeball tournament coverage) and technical know-how to bridge the gap between storytelling and immersive experiences.

Here at Startup Edmonton, we specialize in tech-enabled companies. That's our shorthand for how technology and scale go hand-in-hand; it’s the possibility for a product to expand beyond your expertise and availability.

Not everyone wants to build a tech-enabled product, but there are still lots of ways that you can integrate top technology trends into your business to help scale your marketing, sales, and customer service efforts. What's even better? There are Edmonton-based companies you can tap into for help!

IFTTT (If This Then That) is one of our favourite introductory tools to encourage prototyping. A free web-based service, IFTTT creates applets that use conditional statements to get different services, like Gmail, Twitter or a weather app, to trigger actions. Think of it as creating a recipe that would text you to bring a sweater to work if it dips below -1 degrees, or to send your friends a weekly email of all your newly liked songs from a streaming app (especially if you're the one with the best recommendations!)

We're here to be your personal If This Then That guide for Edmonton Startup Week! If you enjoyed a session or experience at #yegsw17, there is sure to be something for you year-round in our city's growing startup community.

Thank You + Stay Connected All Year Round

Edmonton Startup Week 2017 was a massive celebration of our city's startup community! With more than fifty events and our largest Launch Party yet, we know that there is an incredible network of passionate, engaged, and hard-working people committed to building and growing tech companies in Edmonton. I look forward to sharing lots of updates, photos, and more ways for you to connect with community in the coming weeks.

"One of the best parts of the week is seeing new people find their place in the community. There are dozens of meetups left in 2017, foundational workshops to get your product idea off the ground, and collaborative workspace that can grow as you do."
