The #1 Mistake Founders Make When Pitching Investors

The #1 Mistake Founders Make When Pitching Investors

Pitching to investors can be daunting, but mastering the art of the pitch is essential to gaining access to capital. Being on your game is important when you have investors that hear from 40 to 50 companies a month. Having glitches in your pitch can cost you lasting relationships with people that otherwise could have skyrocketed your success.

Tiffany sat down on Facebook Live and talked about the #1 Mistake Founders Make When Pitching to Investors. Stay tuned to the end for a bonus piece of advice that's easy to start work on today. Check it out below!

Need help pulling together a deck and lots of practice? Join us for Preflight 3: Tell Your Story starting on April 18.

efore Student DevCon 2018, Bryan and Warren sat down to chat all about the student experience at Startup Edmonton. We had an excellent time at DevCon, but there are still lots of ways to stay engaged as a student as the semester wraps up.

Tune in for great advice and suggestions! You can stay up-to-date on all of our student member activities and benefits at startupedmonton.com/students.

Do you have questions about Preflight?

Do you have questions about Preflight?

A few weeks ago Stephanie and Shay sat down for a conversation about Preflight.

Get to know Shay and her approach to mentorship and programs. She also gives a great overview of what you can expect from our Preflight membership. Shay is currently facilitating Preflight 2 and has a new session of Preflight 1 starting on April 12th.

Preflight 1 is a great fit if you want to start moving forward with your tech-product idea. You don't need to know how to build a tech product! This session is all about researching and finding proof that your customers actually want your product before you start to build.

One of the coolest parts of our Preflight membership is that you can join in at any stage of your product development or launch. If you're ready to start talking to investors or you want to map out marketing and sales plans, Preflight 3 is your best option. Over 5-weeks, you'll build out your pitch deck, get lots of feedback, and create 12-week marketing and sales plans to launch in the market or reconnect with your customers.

Student DevCon - Hot on the Heels of Edmonton Student Win at SF Hacks

SF Hacks was this past weekend at San Francisco State University and Paulie Blart Security Robot won! In addition to winning 1st Prize Overall, the team also claimed Best use of IBM Watson and Best Hardware Hack.  Megnath Ramesh, an Edmonton-based student, formed a team with other Major League Hacking participants he met at the event after pitching his idea!

Check out this awesome on-the-ground interview with the entire team! It's a great insight into their process, the problem they were aiming to solve, and some of the challenges of building under a tight time constraint.

Student DevCon 2018 | Don't Miss Out!

Student DevCon 2018 | Don't Miss Out!

Tomorrow, Warren is sitting down for a Facebook Live session all about how to make the most of our city's startup community as a student. We'll archive it and post a link here when it goes up, so you don't miss any of his recommendations!

One thing we hear a lot from students is that they're nervous about making mistakes when it comes to building a project, meeting an important person from a company, or applying for a job. We totally get it, sometimes school feels like a high-stakes game and when you make a mistake, or even fail, the consequences are real. You have to take a course again, that costs money and your path to graduation can feel further away than ever before. The bad news is that fear of making a mistake can hold you back from taking advantage of opportunities that are created just for you to succeed in the long run.

The good news is, there is a massive community in Edmonton to support you every step of the way (and most of us still remember what it was like to be a student and a little unsure of what comes after graduation.)

Student DevCon, March 24, is our biggest day of the year for students and it combines three of our favourite opportunities for students:
