International Women's Day 2019 | Lauren shares ways you can celebrate and get involved!

As Operations Manager at Startup Edmonton, I interact with founders and team members from dozens of tech startup companies. Every day, I’m reminded that our community is friendly, welcoming, and respectful. It’s a culture that members work hard to create, and I’m proud of what we’ve made together.

This week we’re celebrating International Women’s Day! It’s a perfect chance to reflect on why celebrating success matters, how we can all pitch in to break down even more barriers, and connect with more members of our startup, STEM, and entrepreneur communities.

The week is made even more amazing by the release of Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel is my favourite superhero in any universe. She’s Earth’s Mightiest Avenger, and that means she can provide strength, guidance, and leadership to all the other Avengers. That’s what I see so many of the female founders in our community do every day: they rise to the top and then bring along the next generation of women leaders with their advice and mentorship. I’m excited to see her in action on the big screen on Thursday night with so many of my lady friends from the startup community!

Did you know Alberta tech startups are twice as likely to have a female founder than the Canadian average?

March Updates: Opportunities for Startups at Collision, DemoCamp Alberta Applications, Preflight and more!

Today is our March Hack Day, and I'm thrilled to see new folks sticking around after Business Model 101 for lunch with our regular attendees. A big shout out to Farrow for the great sandwiches! I also spy teams from Scope AR and Amii working on their plans for our fifth annual Student Developer Conference.

This month, there are two incredible opportunities for you to apply to showcase your tech product to new customers, collaborators and investors - Collision and DemoCamp Alberta.

Collision is the fastest-growing tech conference in North America. Now in its fifth year, Collision has grown to more than 25,000 attendees. Following the lead of its European event Web Summit, Collision has become a crossroads for the world’s largest buyers and sellers of technology, alongside many of the world’s most disruptive emerging technology companies. We're bringing Edmonton companies with us to Toronto in May, but we need to hear from you before March 18!

Read on for updates on DemoCamp Alberta, Preflight, profiles on member companies, and lots of new job postings from our members.

Facebook Live: We're offering Preflight on Saturdays!

Our home in the historic Mercer Warehouse is jam-packed with activity every night of the week with meetups, workshops, special events, plus all of our members working hard on their tech companies. There is no shortage of ways to connect and get involved in the community!

That's said, it’s tough to find time to explore and dig deep into your idea for a tech product. You’re juggling a lot of demands - kids soccer practices, grocery shopping, friends, professional development, work commitments…. The list can feel like it’s never ending!

In this archived Facebook Live, Shay introduces our new Saturday sessions of Preflight and how we can support your efforts with a couple of hours of dedicated time each weekend.

Facebook Live: Why it's important to participate in extracurricular events as a student

Facebook Live: Why it's important to participate in extracurricular events as a student

In just a few weeks, we’ll welcome hundreds of students to our annual Student Developer Conference. It’s a day dedicated to preparing for life beyond the classroom. Students can build their skills in workshops from industry leaders like Amii, Darkhorse Analytics, Scope AR, and the UX experts from our friends at MacEwan University. It’s also a chance to hear from developers, CTOs, and designers at growing tech companies about their career experiences - from getting hired to joining high-performance teams, and everything in-between.

In this archived Facebook Live, Steph and Adam chat all about their very different university experiences and why extracurricular events matter when you’re a student.

After selling his previous company in 2016, email newsletter service Mailout, Gregg Oldring was trying to figure out what to do with the empty downtown office space for which he still had a lease. Then he ran into Tony Williams, at that time merely an acquaintance, at a coffee shop.

“I didn’t really know him that well, at that point,” says Oldring. “We had that classic conversation, ‘What do you do for a living?’ And Tony’s response that day was, ‘What I do is stupid.’ Which got me thinking, ‘Okay, tell me more.’”

Meet Martha White - Dispelling fears about artificial intelligence

Martha White would like to dispel the fears and hype about artificial intelligence.

The University of Alberta assistant professor says AI will be a collaborator helping humans make better decisions.

“Once we start to have better and better AI it will be like having a better and better member of our team.… They will have complementary or even similar skills, and together we can all accomplish more,” White says.

Darren Nakonechny is excited. In a few weeks, the first PATCH units — a digitally controlled analog routing system for audio recording — that he and his colleagues at Flock Audio have been developing for almost two years, will be shipping out to the customers who had preordered them in 2018.

“You go through such rough times along the way it makes you wonder, ‘Is this going to actually be something, or is it going to fail?’” explains Nakonechny, founder and CEO of the Edmonton audio company. “But when you step back, you go ‘Wow, this is very cool.’ We started literally in the basement of my home and now we have an office and work with a network of professionals building a product that people are excited about. Shipping out our first units is a milestone we’ve all been working toward for a long time.”
